I’m putting all my hope in driverless car technology as I make my Golden Years approach. That would solve everything when it’s time for me to stop driving.
I was going to say when it was time to “take my keys away,” but that’s a horrible phrase and too many seniors are using it. Driving is a privilege and yes, it stinks when someone SUGGESTS that the risks outweigh the privilege, but it’s more about being released from the responsibility than having your keys snatched IMHO. I seriously look forward to it, take my damn keys now, LOL. I know, it feels like your independence is wrecked but if you’re expecting it and anticipating this milestone with some excitement around finally being the passenger, perhaps it feels less like taking and more like EFF Yeah, I have ARRIVED!
There’s too much technology out there now to be afraid of being de-independenced on our sunset stroll, between the Ubers and the driverless cars and heck, the drones that will airlift us places. It’s just one more thing to put on our What to Expect When You’re Expecting to be Old list: You will have to stop driving one day, and it’s going to be no big deal. If that thought IS a big deal, however, it’s time to consider moving to a place that offers walk- or scoot-ability to all the places you need to access for life happiness. #GrandPlans
