Thou shalt sharpen your empathy skills

Grammandment #10: Thou shalt sharpen your empathy and gratitude skillz. When I’m a super fly super fine senior, I want to be aware that my behavior or situation or condition could be affecting someone else’s life in a big way — and it’s probably not positive.

I dare you to visit a caregiver support group on the Facebook and hear how people’s lives are altered in this role. These are lives put on hold. They are desperate and angry and fed up because there is such a dearth of gratitude and empathy from their senior loved ones.

Please Lord, do not let me go through my golden years oblivious to the truth that helping me probably means someone loving is giving up their lunch hour, vacation, paycheck, career, family time or vision of the future. Please remind me to be grateful, always.

We teach our children these basic lessons in empathy and thankfulness from their earliest years whether it’s through thank you note writing nudges or “how do you think that made someone feel” sessions in time-out. Apparently, we need a refresher-course on these important topics later in life. Please someone put me in the corner or make me write sentences until I’m clear on this during my sunset stroll. #GrandPlans
